Running Track Systems: Economy vs. Durability

Not all running tracks are made the same. There are lots of options to choose from, differing in product type and its application. There are five basic track surface types: basemat, structural spray, impermeable/sealed structural spray, sandwich system, and full pour.  All surface types are made up of rubber granules and polyurethane binder but differ in their ratio of rubber to polyurethane binder and their application methods.

Economy vs. Durability

When choosing a running track surface, the owner must evaluate their project goal: do they want their project economically priced, or more durable for longevity and frequent use? If the project’s budget is the main concern, a more economical surfacing system, like the PTS 2000 structural spray, may be the best option. For high-use or competition tracks, a durable, high-performance system, such as a full-pour, is a suitable solution.

Economic Options

Base mats and spray coat systems are the most economical selections for non-competition, walking tracks, or elementary and middle school tracks. The base mat system (PTS 1000) is a single layer, while a spray coat system (PTS 2000) is two layers, and an impermeable spray coat system (PTS 3000) is three.

Durable Options

The more durable options for track surfaces are sandwich and full-pour systems, most frequently used for stadiums and competition tracks. All systems feature three, impermeable layers, with sandwich systems (PTS 4000) containing a seal coat and broadcast layer and full-pour systems (PTS 5000 and PTS 5000x) consisting of multiple flood and chip layers. The 5000x system features a unique, self-leveling foaming intermediate layer for increased performance.
