Repurposed: World Series Championship Turf Takes on a New Life

Mercy Street Sports Complex in west Dallas provides mentorship opportunities for children around the area. Home of the Texas Rangers MLB Youth Academy, one of Mercy Street’s main pillars is youth sports programming. The Texas Rangers Baseball Club in conjunction with the MLB chose Mercy Street’s last standing natural grass baseball field to convert to a synthetic turf field as part of the 2024 All-Star Week festivities. Texas-based Paragon Sports Constructors was chosen to construct the project based on the Texas Rangers’ longstanding relationship with the company.
PROJECT GOALS
Mercy Street Sports Complex had multiple synthetic turf fields, with All-Star Legacy Field as the last remaining natural grass field. The owner wanted to increase programming options at the site to host 18U competition games, instructional camps, and multi-team practices. The field also hosts Dallas ISD’s Pinkston High School baseball games, making natural grass difficult to maintain with constant use and unpredictable weather conditions.

WORLD SERIES TURF
The grass areas of All Star Legacy Field were previously installed at Globe Life Field as the home turf of the Texas Rangers from 2020-2024. The turf hosted two World Series, including the Ranger’s postseason championship run in 2023. The clay areas of All Star Legacy Field were added to fill in for the dirt areas of the Rangers field, comprised of Shaw Sports Turf’s TruHop for the base path on the game field, Legion Pro for the corner fields, and Momentum Pro for the warning track.

Additional site renovations
The large field size was utilized to make three different infields, providing space for multiple teams to practice at once. To accommodate the newly added infields, barrier netting was added along the outfield to protect the adjacent road from foul balls. The chain link backstop was replaced with a netting system for improved fan visibility. Additional covered dugouts were installed at the corner infields, and both bullpens were renovated with synthetic turf.
