Synthetic Turf Life Cycle: What to Expect as your Field Ages

Every synthetic turf field ages differently.  Turf wear is often determined by the product but is also affected by type and frequency of use, infill depth, field location, and even the maintenance practices of the field.  Your field’s performance may also be affected by base construction, infill composition, and the use of a shock pad or e-layer.

No matter what turf system you have, synthetic fields will eventually lay-over and their color may diminish or fade with time.  Fields may even lose some fiber with time and use.  Outlined below are the common phases of lifecycle wear for many turf fields.

Life Cycle Wear

Initial (approximately 1-2 years): The field is newly installed, and the fibers are upright. Infill is at full depth but may be loose.

Settled (approximately 3-6 years): Fibers are not as upright and are beginning to lay over. The infill has consolidated slightly and may result in more pile reveal.

Mature (approximately 7-8+ years): The fibers have laid over and infill has consolidated further.  The field surface is consistent but may have color variation due to fading and laying fiber.
