This question inevitably comes up when owners and designers are deciding how to address the long-term maintenance needs of high wear areas on turf baseball & softball fields.
With the rapidly growing popularity of synthetic turf baseball & softball fields, owners, designers, contractors, & turf manufacturers have all grappled with the best approach to maintaining the high wear areas.
Velcro inserts quickly became a logical solution that in theory allowed the owner to change out their high wear areas at their preference. Unfortunately, as outlined below, these are less practical than intended, and if not done correctly can create injury risk for players. Not to mention the storage requirements that many owners do not have for hundreds of square feet of turf materials.
GLUED VS. VELCRO INSERTS
We believe the best solution to high wear areas is to cut & glue the replacement areas, especially at home plate where players may be sliding across the seam.
Glued seams are more secure, and when done professionally, hold better and longer than Velcro. While these high-wear areas seem small, they are bulky and heavy to handle once the infill is taken into consideration. The infill must be removed properly from the turf before it can be removed from the area; any infill that falls into the Velcro may impede adhesion or create a lip that can become a tripping hazard.
This issue was on display during the 2026 NCAA Baseball Tournament when a Clemson baseball player slid into home plate across a Velcro seam that was not secured adequately and caused the right-handed batters’ box to roll-up under the player. While the player walked off the field, the weight of these Velcro inserts can potentially cause major injury.

For reference, a single batters’ box is 24 square feet. Assuming an infill weight of 8 lbs/sf, that is 192 pounds of material the player is colliding with!
Professionally replaced, glued seams provide a stronger bond and ensure planarity to reduce tripping hazards and other safety issues as witnessed in the Clemson example above.
WHAT ARE THE COMMON HIGH WEAR AREAS ON TURF BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL FIELDS?

These areas see concentrated wear and will need to be replaced periodically throughout the field’s useful life.
how often do the high wear areas need to be replaced?
This is highly dependent on the owner’s aesthetic preference for wear of the field or their safety assessment of these areas. We have owners who can go four years before replacing their pitchers’ mound and batters’ boxes and we have owners who replace them annually; there really is no one-size-fits-all solution to the timing.
For project planning purposes, a safe guideline would be every other year for the pitching mound and batters & catchers’ boxes at home plate.
Use of practice mats and periodic spot dressing of the high wear areas with reserve infill can help preserve the pitchers’ mound and home plate batters’ & catchers’ boxes between change outs.
specifying high wear replacements for baseball & softball fields
The challenges to specifying baseball & softball high wear areas include:
- No one-size-fits all solution for timing and future need of replacements
- Customers can end up overpaying for materials they may not need
- Bulky materials that need proper storage
We have found the best solution for customers and contractors / service providers is:
- Request that the contractor include practice mats for the pitching mound and home plate areas with their bid
- Request that the provider hold a certain amount of material for future repairs on the owners’ behalf. Our recommended materials would be:
4 change outs of the pitchers’ mound throwing sector / softball circle throwing sector
4 change outs of the home plate batters’ and catchers’ boxes
2 change outs of the bullpen pitching mounds
- Owner pays for labor to properly replace the high wear areas in the future when needed
