A New Home: Colorado ISD’s Design-Build Baseball & Softball Complex

Completed facilities at Colorado ISD Baseball-Softball complex.
Not having their own fields to call home, the Colorado High School baseball and softball teams have played their home games at Colorado County owned fields for years. Colorado ISD administration wanted to give baseball and softball student-athletes the same opportunities given to the district’s other sports by providing them with their own pristine athletic facilities. The district had the perfect spot for a new home located by Wolf Stadium, however the existing grass fields had not been utilized for years and needed complete overhaul. Colorado ISD chose Paragon Sports Constructors as their design-build partner to design, construct, and install a new baseball-softball complex for the Wolves.
choosing a partner
Colorado ISD chose Paragon Sports Constructors for their project based on the company’s relationship with their clients. Athletic Director Monty Leaf knew PSC for their Shaw Sports Turf product selection, “but what [he] learned through the [project] process is the extent they go to build a relationship with their customers and how far they are willing to go to make the process as good as it can be.”

“Paragon’s ability to take a vision and make it a reality is unmatched. We gave them an old, beat-up dirt practice field and they were able to create one of, if not the best baseball and softball complexes in West Texas.”

project scope
Removal of existing grass fields
Excavated subgrade to new elevations and compacted to proper density & moisture
Installation of concrete perimeter curb, drainage system, liner, and drain stone layer
Installation of synthetic turf system
New CMU block dugouts, backstop wall, netting, fencing, batting cages, lights, and bleachers with shade structures
“Paragon Constructors walked us through each phase and gave us sound advice. I knew PSC was a good company, but their willingness to go the extra mile sets them apart from their competitors. As a small, rural, and often overlooked school district, we felt like we were the priority for PSC and that matters.”

starting from scratch
The site’s drainage plans required creativity due to the project location being relatively flat. The design team supported the site by incorporating a small depression to hold water and slowly trickle it into the city drainage system. Beyond the fields, Colorado ISD wanted a complex that supported fans and players alike, adding CMU block dugouts, bleachers with shade structures, and stadium lighting with customizable action lighting and color options.

“Mason Mullen and his crew made things happen day after day out there. [Project Foreman]Dagoberto took on new challenges to get some pressure off Mason and absolutely crushed it. They never knew what mother nature was going to throw at them, but they just kept on keeping on. It is truly unbelievable how quickly they transformed that place.”

community impact
The baseball-softball complex is a middle ground between the western and northern parts of Texas, with the area hosting teams from Canyon, Odessa, El Paso, DFW, and more. With their new facilities, Colorado ISD plans to serve as a neutral game host for years to come. When asked about the community impact of the new baseball and softball fields, Colorado ISD Athletic Director Monty Leaf said the impact is “priceless. If you could have been a fly on the wall to just watch the reaction from our kids, stakeholders, and community members when we had our grand opening…it would have sold you on PSC without question or hesitation.”
As a turn-key athletic facility services provider, Paragon Sports Constructors understands the complexities of installing and maintaining sports facilities.
